IRS2Go App: Check the Status of Your Refund by iPhone or Android

IRS2Go iPhone AppHave you downloaded the IRS2Go App yet? Put it on your smart phone, either the iPhone or any Android phone, and you can check the status of your 2011 federal tax refund once you file. I don’t know why I feel possessed to blog about this thing, but here goes.

The App has four modules. In the first, you can check the status of your refund by simply entering your social security number, filing status, and refund amount (in whole dollars). I tested it out and was quickly told that I must have entered some information incorrectly. I haven’t filed yet so that makes sense. The other features are:

  • Get Tax Updates – A place for you to provide your email to the IRS to get tax updates. By entering your email address, you are subscribing to their “Tax Tips” newsletter which will provide you will tax information via email daily during the tax filing season and periodically throughout the rest of the year. I’m giving the service a try to see what tips they send over.
  • Follow Us – The IRS is tweeting @IRSNews. Launching this module will show you their latest tweets. It will also give you a change to follow @IRSNews. When you click follow, the app load Twitter in your mobile browser. From there you will need to log in to be able to follow them.
  • Contact Us – This final module gives you one click access to a variety of phone numbers to contact the IRS. They state that when calling you can ask questions to help you prepare your tax return or ask about a notice you have received.

In addition to this app, the IRS has a website called “Where’s My Refund?” that you can use to check up on your refund status. Amended, prior year, and business tax returns aren’t available through the website or app.

What do you think of the app? Will you be downloading it this tax season?
