This is my review of the Chase Sapphire Credit Card, a new card offering from Chase Bank.
Mrs. PT often travels with me when I go off to a distant land to perform my full-time job duties. My airfare is covered by my company through a corporate credit card. But we have to personally fork over the funds for her ticket. We make sure and take advantage of any airline miles we can get. And we also like to maximize our credit card reward points for such a big purchase.
In the past we’ve used a Bank of America AmEx credit card, which for a limited time gave us 2 points for every dollar spent on travel. Since that option has expired, I’m looking around for another card to help us max out our travel rewards. The Chase Sapphire Card looks like a good card to consider.
The card does not have an annual fee. This is the first thing I usually look for in a card: “will they charge me for simply having the card?” How some cards get away with this I don’t know. Anyway, the Chase Sapphire card does not have an annual fee.
With this card you get a baseline of 1 point for every dollar spent. That’s pretty standard right now. But what isn’t standard is the extra point (for a total of 2 points per dollar) for travel booked through the Chase travel tool. Barring any type of issues with this travel tool, this looks to be a good deal for heavy travelers. For example, every $10,000 in airfare annually would get you 20,000 points (or $200).
The best part about this card might be the 10,000 point bonus (this equates to $100). All you have to do to get the $100 bonus is sign up for the card, get accepted, use the card once, and then “allow 6 to 8 weeks for bonus points to post to your account.” The points can be redeemed for a $100 gift card, not cash back.
Chase has a Travel Booking Tool that you must use to get the 2 points per dollar. And here’s how Chase suggests booking your reward travel once you’ve earned your points:
“If you find a low-priced airline ticket anywhere online, simply visit our Travel Booking Tool, search for that same ticket and book it with points for the same low price.”
Some of the features of the Chase Sapphire Card:
- 10,000 Bonus Points
- No Annual Fee
- 1 Point Per Dollar
- 2 Points Per Airfare Dollars
- Points can be redeemed for Cash Back
- No blackout dates, earnings caps, or points expiration
It should be noted that this card doesn’t offer a decent balance transfer rate. Also, I don’t use credit cards from month to month so I don’t factor in APR in my reviews. I only care about points and fees.
The bottom line on the Chase Sapphire Card is that it looks to be a great card for the heavy traveler and the occasional credit card bonus chaser.
