City Bike Tour: Frugal Sightseeing

My City Bike Tour of Sydney

When I was in Sydney last month I went on a bike tour of the city.  I’d never been to Sydney before and so I wanted a quick way to see the sights, learn some history, and get a bit of exercise.  At the same time, I didn’t want to spend a fortune.  I figured cruising the city on a bike was the way to go.  I’ve rented a bike on vacation before and ventured out guide-less with a friend.  But this time I was alone, and knew little about Sydney.

Then I read that Trip Advisor, my favorite travel related website, said the #1 attraction in Sydney was a place called Bonza Bike Tours.  So, I checked out their website and saw that they had a 4-hour “Classic Sydney Tour” for $89 AUD (around $60 USD at the time).  That’s not exactly cheap, but it packed a big value for what I was looking for.

I ended up having a great time on the tour.  I learned a lot of the unique history of Sydney, met some interesting people from all over, and picked up a few pointers for the rest of my stay.  It rained a bit, but our guide had ponchos, and it made for a few memorable moments.  I definitely recommend the Bonza Bike Tours if you’re ever in Sydney, or any of these other notable bike tours below.

Other City Bike Tours

Bay City Bike (San Francisco)
Bike the Big Apple (New York)
Capital City Bike Tours (Washington, D.C.)
Rad City Bike Tours (Munich)

For even more cities, simply search Google for “bike tour” followed by the city you’re visiting.

Who Should Take a Bike Tour?

Bike tours aren’t for everyone.  You should definitely be pretty comfortable riding a bike, and depending on the city, be able to handle some decent hills.  Sydney was a solid workout with a surprising number of hills.  Make sure you’ve got comfortable clothes and closed-toed shoes.

Make the Most of Your Bike Tour

While on my tour, I buddied up to the tour guide (a nice college kid named Latch) and asked him about his favorite local restaurants, shopping areas, and other areas of interest I might should see.  He was able to give me a few solid tips that I utilized throughout the rest of my stay.  Tour guides are essentially what you’re paying for with a bike tour vs. just renting, so make the most of them.

Man that is amazing. All the good cities have nice bike tours and Philly has a nice one on the waterfront and schukyll river. Not sure if it is up at the level of SF, Sydney, or NYC. Munich? wow I can only imagine what that is like.

I just started working for a great little company called Bike and Roll which offers tours and rentals in Washington, DC, New York, Chicago, Miami and San Francisco. I've lived in DC for 5 years and learned more than I could have imagined the first time I took one of our tours. Hopping on a bike is a great way to cover a lot of ground, have fun and learn!

What a great way to see the city! I was in Sydney in October except we caught the train alot.

If you're in NY in September a great ride is the NYC Century Tour! There's are lower mileage rides but I like to 100 miler. You ride through four of the five boroughs and see all different parts of the city. It's a lot of fun and everyone on the tour has a great attitude. (And they usually have Krispy Kreme donuts at the rest stops!) Here's the link:

I've done the tour 3 times now.

Fantastic shirt! :-) Good to see it's getting international use! ~Betsy
