You may have noticed I made some changes to the way I’m presenting information here at PT Money. I thought I might take a second to revisit all the ways you can get more out of this website. There’s more to it than simply bookmarking it, or trying to remember to come back each day.

You can have the content automatically delivered to you. There are main 5 ways to get my free content delivered to you. None of these 5 ways will ever cost you a dime. They’re all easy to sign up with. And you can unsubscribe from each one instantly, whenever you like. Okay, here’s a comparison so you can determine which one is best for you:

RSS

Cost: Free

How Often: 3 or 4 updates per week. You get my articles within minutes of when I post them. Typically around 6 am CST on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and sometimes Sunday.

What You Get: The full content of my latest article. No clutter from the website or sidebar. Just the text and images from my articles. This is my favorite way to read blog posts. If you don’t really understand RSS, check this helpful video explaining RSS.

How You Sign Up: Click here for my RSS feed.

RSS by Email

Cost: Free

How Often: 3 or 4 emails per week. Typically around noon on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and sometimes Sunday.

What You Get: The full content of my latest article. No clutter from the website or sidebar. Just the text and images from my articles.

How to Sign Up: Click here for RSS by email.

Facebook

Cost: Free

How Often: 3 or 4 mentions on your news feed per week. Typically around 6 am CST on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and sometimes Sunday

What You Get: A small blurb about the article, picture, and a link to access my website where you can read the entire thing.

How You Sign Up: Click here to visit my Facebook page.

Bonus Content Areas:

These next two connection points will give you updates about what’s on this blog. Plus a lot more content. Still free.

Twitter

Cost: Free

How Often: While I tweet several times a day, my actual blog post tweets follow the same pattern as my RSS feed. Typically around 6 am CST on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and sometimes Sunday.

What You Get: A small blurb and a link to my latest blog post. Plus, tweets with links to other interesting articles. Quick money tips and links to freebies. This is where I share ideas too small to create a full article. I also occasionally share a bit more personal information.

How You Sign Up: Click here to be taken to my Twitter Profile.

Newsletter

Cost: Free

How Often: No more than 1 or 2 emails per week. Twice a month for the actual latest blog posts roundup.

What You Get: Access to all of my e-books (yes, there’s more than 1). My 6 week series, “The 6 Key Takeaways of Personal Finance”. Latest 10 posts on the blog (you’ll get this around 2 times a month). TBD (I’m still working on more detailed content for the newsletter). I’m really excited about this new aspect to my content. And I hope to really help a whole new audience of people with this service.

How You Sign Up: Use the form below…

It’s been a while since I’ve shared some of my personal updates as well as some of the more interesting things going on around the interwebs. I’ll take today’s post to get you up to speed.

Recent Local Blogger Meetup

I recently had the opportunity to meet another personal finance blogger that lives in my area. Jason from One Money Design and I met at our local library to discuss blogging, finance, life, and generally just get to know each other. I had a great time and enjoyed getting to meet someone from the online world in “real” life. You can learn more about Jason by visiting his blog (www.onemoneydesign.com), signing up for his free updates, and by following him on twitter (@onemoneydesign).

New Auto Insurance Policy

While I was doing some searching for life insurance (Yes, I’m still in the process of getting life insurance. Almost done though. I promise.), I stumbled upon a nice auto insurance deal from a professional organization that I’m a member of. I ran a quote with Geico and was pleasantly surprised. I’m going to sound like a commercial here, but “I saved a bunch of money by switching to Geico.” ( I love the new “roofers” Geico commercial) A word of caution to those who may be considering a similar move: be sure you compare the old policy and the new one side-by-side to ensure you’re getting the same coverage. My new policy has the same coverage AND it’s around $200 less per six months.

Blog Updates (if you care)

You may have noticed the subtle branding changes I’ve made to the blog. I’m moving away from the “Prime Time Money” name and simply going with “PT Money”. With the url being ptmoney.com, I just thought it made sense to make things concise and just go with the one name. But just because the name is changing, it doesn’t mean the focus is now all on me, PT. The goal will still be to provide you with content that’s of interest to you, first and foremost. Contact me if you’d like to discuss a particular topic, or if you have a story to share.

I’m happy to report that the side-income that I’m able to produce from the site has really been strong lately. In a future post I’d like to share how I make a bit of extra money from the blog. I occasionally let myself think of one day making a full-time living from this site, but realistically that’s still a few years away. David from Money Under 30 recently shared his story of becoming a full-time blogger. A great read if you’re into that kind of thing.

In other news…I’m a bad@ss. Well, at least my blog is. The fine folks at this Australian Credit Card website listed PT Money as on of the Top 25 Badass Personal Finance Blogs. Very cool list of friends, as well as some pretty sweet caricatures of some of us. Check out my bling, yo.

Change Jobs = More Money

With the way the economy is, it’s probably a moot question anyway – Would you change jobs if it meant you are going to be earning more money? But, it is a question that needs to be answered, because if the situation does present itself, you need to know how to act. In my book, it’s not wise to change jobs when it’s a matter of just more money, because money comes and goes – what’s more important is job satisfaction and the extent to which you enjoy your job.

Consider a Job Change If…

Although the economy shows a few signs of picking up, jobs, especially the ones that offer the combination of stability and a good pay packet, are still scarce and few and far between. This means that it is wise to hold on to the job that you do have rather than go looking for something that pays better, unless:

You absolutely hate what you do: The most important aspect of a job is that you love what you do; if you don’t, you’re likely to be miserable and just go about the motions because you need the money. This in turn leads to mistakes and possible termination. So if you don’t love what you do, do what you love or learn to love what you do.

You really need the money: If you must make extra money to take care of debts that must be paid back, it’s ok to take up a new job that pays more if you’re sure about the reputation of the company and if you don’t have to make too many sacrifices in the process.

You don’t have to relocate: or make any other significant changes in your life that affect its quality. When you have to make too many changes in your life, you end up resenting it and take it out on your job.

When you change jobs just for the money, there’s no end to it; you tend to keep job hopping all your life, flitting like a bee from flower to flower without really gathering anything of substance. In short, you’re a rolling stone that gathers no moss. When you’re in a position in life that requires stability, it’s best to act with more responsibility and stick to something that you know and trust rather than tread into the unknown where your salary may not be steady or your job secure.

Have you ever changed jobs for more money? I know I have, but I’d love to hear your story below in the comments…

I little more than a year ago I created the Personal Finance Blogger Map. I initially thought it would only be a resource for us personal finance bloggers to connect with one another, plan meet-ups, etc. For that reason I haven’t really promoted it to you, the reader. But over the past year I’ve received many submissions and the map has grown to include over 100 personal finance bloggers from all over the US, and several from around the World.

The page is pretty simple to navigate (just like Google maps). Once you’re on the page, you just click on the markers and a pop-up bubble will show you a link to a blog in that area. Head over and give it a try.

So why the heck should you care? Well, I thought it might be useful as a resource for you, the reader, to locate someone in your area in order that you might get a more local personal finance perspective. Now I’m not looking for you to stop reading Prime Time Money. I just thought it might benefit you if you found someone that might be in touch with what’s going on in your area. For instance, it might help to be reading someone that:

Understands the State/Country laws that are affecting your finances.

Knows where to find the best deals to help you save money in your area.

Uses the same regional terminology (slang) as you.

At the end of the day, we bloggers are all just people like you. We all have concerns about what’s going on in our own back yards. Therefore, even if the blogger doesn’t write specifically about his/her local area, they’re going to know about it. And most of us don’t mind receiving an email to discuss local issues or to share our local money saving tips. So go ahead. Find your local blogger and reach out for that local perspective.

In case you don’t want to use the map (which is way funner, by the way), I’ve included a list of the bloggers included in the map. Don’t forget to scroll down to see the international bloggers.

Would you ever consider relocating to a city with more job opportunities? CNN Money recently released their Best Places to Live 2009 list. This year’s ranking was, for obvious reasons, heavily slanted towards cities that provided the most job opportunities. The top ten cities were:

1. Louisville, CO
2. Chanhassen, MN
3. Papillion, NE
4. Middleton, WI
5. Milton, MA
6. Warren, NJ
7. Keller, TX
8. Peachtree City, GA
9. Lake St. Louis, MO
10. Mukilteo, WA

Early in my career I made a move to a city with more opportunity. At the time I didn’t have any responsibilities or ties that could hold me back from moving. I didn’t have a wife or kids in school. I was free to find the best place for me at the time.

Looking back, I definitely consider it a good move from a career perspective. I’ve changed jobs 3 times within this city since first moving, and at each change I had multiple job opportunities made available to me. I wouldn’t have had those I don’t think had I stayed put.

Now that I do have a wife and kid, as well as a community that I’m involved in, it would be a tough decision to make the move to a new city just for a job opportunity. Do you think you could do it? Have you made that move? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.

Just received this email from my friend Aaron concerning high-interest online savings. Specifically, ING DIRECT’s Orange Account:

“I have a quick question for you. I have about 6 months of emergency savings saved up in a savings account at a regional bank. My friend was telling me how he moved his savings over to ING DIRECT and has been happy with those guys. I was thinking of doing the same. What do you think?”

I’m definitely a big fan of using a high-interest online savings account for your emergency savings. Most are FDIC insured. Typically they don’t come with any fees or minimum balances. And best of all, they pay you higher interest than a typical brick and mortar type bank.

One last reason I like this type of account for emergency savings is because it separates your savings from your checking account. How many times do you find yourself dipping into your emergency fund just because it’s easy access? These online savings accounts aren’t as accessible (they typically take 3 business days or more to move your money in and out). In that sense, I’ve found that I’m able to stick my money there and forget about it until an emergency comes up.

And as for ING DIRECT, they’re definitely one of the top high-yield online savings accounts available. Known for their nice website and great service. They also offer a $25 bonus for accounts opened with more than $250. Hope that helps.

So I thought I’d take the opportunity during this quickhits post to update you on a few of my own recent personal finance experiences.

It’s Hard to Get Life Insurance

My “just get life insurance already” effort is still underway. A month or two ago I called Zander Insurance (Dave Ramsey’s ELP) and requested a quote on 30 year term life insurance. They showed me the best rate and sent me all the paperwork. I filled out an application and waited a few weeks for the required medical exam. I thought I was done. Apparently, due to the international travel related to my full-time job, I’m required to complete an extra form. So, that’s what I’m doing now. I should have life insurance by September at this rate.

I’m really surprised at how long this process has taken. Kind of morbid of me, but I can’t help but wonder how many people have died while applying for life insurance.

Researching College Savings 529 Plans

We’d like to start something up for our little one for college expenses. To be honest, I’ve been bogged down in the many choices and types of plans there are available. I don’t want to let that slow us down anymore though. I’ve got the program description for the Utah Education Savings Plan out and in front of me. In a few different places I’ve seen this plan recommended as one of the best 529 savings plans. It seems to have the lower costs and many investment options. I also don’t have state taxes to worry about since I’m here in Texas. We’re close to opening this account, setting up the automatic deposit and being done with it.

Quick Hits

Here’s a few blog posts I found especially interesting last week. Enjoy!

Tough Money Love celebrated his first full year of blogging by inviting others to share the Personal Finance Lesson Learned the Hard Way.

Bargaineering presents a nice read about Supermarket Psychology. Includes some good tips for shopping and 7 items to skip.

Amateur Asset Allocator shares his thoughts on why Your Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance isn’t Necessarily the Best Deal. I thought this was a timely read considering all the chatter that’s been going on around the proposed Govt sponsored plan.
