What’s Your Biggest Summer Splurge?

by · 15 comments

I’m all about talking about spending wisely here at PT Money. So I wanna know, what’s been (or what will be) your biggest splurge of the Summer months?

I’m not talking about wasted spending. I’m referring to something expensive and unnecessary that you consciously chose to buy.

For instance, you might have taken an extra-special vacation this Summer. Or maybe you finally broke down and purchased the new Apple iPad 2.

I’ve had a real urge to splurge here lately. I’ve got my sights set on a classic motorcycle. It’s a 70′s Honda CB550. When it’s all said and done, after riding classes, my license, gear, and the bike, I’m looking at shelling out $3,000. I’ve never really been a motorcycle guy, but strangely the desire for this one is strong.

As you guys know, splurging isn’t inherently bad from a financial standpoint. In fact, it can be quite the efficient use of your money if the splurge brings high value to you. But it’s still fun to talk about them like they were a little diversion from your normal tight-fisted, frugal ways. So here we go, let loose in the comments about your big Summer splurge.

Three questions for you to answer:

  1. What did you splurge on?
  2. What did you give up to be able to splurge?
  3. Was the splurge worth it?

Blew $10,000 in las vegas last week for my 26th birthday on a fancy suite, exotic rental car, nightclubs, lap dances, gambling, dinner, shopping, then I came home and purchased an alienware m18x laptop for $3,500.00 :(

haven't given up anything yet but i'm sure i'll sell some stuff on craigslist

was it worth it?: Definitely!!!

Go for it, Phil. That's a nice bike! As for me, I'm considering a classic Corvette. I had my wife convinced a couple weeks ago and went to look at one, but the owner misrepresented it on Craigslist and it ended up being a waste of time. Now my wife is reconsidering. Oh well. Maybe I'll get one in the near future, or maybe it will have to wait... Either way, the dream is still fun. :)

1. What did you splurge on? Rock climbing gear.
2. What did you give up to be able to splurge? Eating out for dinner with friends a couple of times.
3. Was the splurge worth it? Yes!

A canoe! Renting canoes every summer really starts to add up (50$ a pop). So we found one on Craig's List for 400$ and the justification is that it will pay for itself eventually as long as it doesn't need repairs. Totally worth it, spending time outdoors with the family on the weekends is priceless, plus it prevents us from going out shopping if we are hanging out at the lake in a canoe.

That is a beautiful motorcycle. I would like to get a new driver for golf but will probably wait until next summer.

I'm envisioning matching helmets but wondering if the car seat will fit securely in your sidecar...

I have yet to splurge on anything this summer. Considering a new (to me) lens for for my camera. Not sure what I'll actually give up...maybe sell a few more unneeded/unused items that are laying around the house on craigslist. I think this new lens would get used a ton with all the cuties to take pics of at this house :)

PT, my husband's pride and joy is a 1975 Honda CB200T. That was one of his best splurges several years ago. We get a great deal of fun out of it, particularly for rides in the fall. And it always gives him something to tinker with in the garage. Go for it!

Awesome! That's nice bike. I'd go for one if I wasn't so darn big. Good to hear you guys are enjoying it. I'm hoping to make it my puttering around town bike, and when it turns cool, maybe I can convince Mrs. PT to hop on and go for a ride. We'll see. Glad to know someone else has an appreciation for these classic bikes in their stock form. Too many have been chopped it seems.

Our summer splurge is purchasing a camper. We have wanted to get one for about 3 years now but never took the plunge - until now. We are giving up a little wiggle room in our finances and adding a few months to paying off some debt. But we will be able to do some inexpensive traveling, making many family memories for years to come, and relieving stress - and that is worth it to me.

Sounds like you at least took your time with the purchase and made sure you really wanted it. Good for you. I hope you get a ton of use out of it...and I hope the freedom that it brings motivates you to be out of your debt even faster.

Alienware m17x fully loaded laptop for 2,500 bucks. Im regretting it now, I should have waited a couple of month. Now the M18x is the same price.

I had to promise my girlfriend I will do all the house chores for a whole month in order to get permission to buy it. Damn and she aint even my wife yet...can't imagine

The curse of new technology...you gotta have it, then it's obsolete. I'm sure you're getting some good use from it though, michael. I might try that chores bargaining chip on Mrs. PT.
