My Visit to the Taj Mahal

This weekend I visited the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.  It was a great experience.  “The Taj” (as our guide kept calling it) is truly a Wonder of the World.  Some random facts and money related info about the Taj:

  • Taj Mahal actually means “crown palace” which is odd since it’s a mausoleum.
  • It is believed to have cost 35 million rupees to build the Taj Mahal. (That would be about 1 million US dollars.)  Considering it was built back in the 1600s, that’s pretty impressive.
  • The Taj Mahal attracts from 2 to 4 million visitors annually.
  • The current charge of admission is 500 rupees (around $13 USD) for non-Indians, and 20 rupees for Indians.  Admission comes with a free bottle of water.  They don’t take US dollars anymore though.

If you’re ever close to the area I recommend taking the 4 hour drive from Delhi down to Agra.  It’s definitely worth the drive and price of admission.

Yes, the Taj is truly awesome. I consider it as one of the buildings that have moved me when I laid my eyes on them.
