This is Why I Pay for Satellite TV and TIVO

Awesome Sports Night

If you read this blog you know I’m a Texan, I like my sports, and I love The Office.  Well, tonight’s TV Lineup is one for the ages, if you’re me.  So much, I thought it was worth noting on the blog (all times CDT):

  • 4 & 7 – MLB – Texas Ranger’s Doubleheader vs. Baltimore Orioles
  • 7:30 – NBA – Dallas Mavericks vs Utah Jazz
  • 8 – The Office (It’s back!)
  • 9 – NHL – Dallas Stars vs. Anaheim Ducks – Playoffs Round 1

…oh, and there are Master’s (Golf) round one highlights to check out.

Is that incredible or what?!  I’ll try and tie this into personal finance….

Spend Your Money on Things You Value

Sometime it’s worth it to spend a little of your hard-earned money on something you’ll really enjoy even though others might consider it frivolous.  It’s days like today that remind me of why I pay the high satellite TV bills, pay extra for a DVR/TIVO device, put up with the poor customer service, etc…

Do you spend money on something that other’s might consider extravagant or a waste?

I agree! I have decided that DVR is frivolous yet indispensable. It really shines on days like these.

I pay for an apartment the post people would consider expensive for someone my age, living alone. But it’s important to me to have a functional home office, space in the living room, my bed in a separate room, and a deck to be outside on. It’s not bad, but I pay a few hundred than my friends pay because it’s important to me :)

I tend not to cut corners on vacations and I do enjoy going to the movies even though they are outrageously expensive.

Two things come to mind: my haircuts and the exterminator.

This is totally a chick-thing, I’m sure… My haircuts are just cuts (no color, blow-out, etc) and I pay $55 every six weeks. My rationale (excuse?) is that I am a high school teacher. I need to look professional, both for them and for their parents when I am in contact with them. Plus, a great cut lasts longer than a crappy one, and I’m not stressed about whether or not I appear unprofessional. I’ve known and loved my stylist for over 10 years… she’s quick to tell me if a cut I want won’t work with my hair/face/etc… That honesty is priceless. Plus, she keeps up on the latest styles, but knows that I’m pretty conservative. She ALWAYS does a perfect job.

And the exterminator is a necessity at $60 every quarter. I could treat fire ant mounds and kill bugs as I see them, but I MUCH PREFER not seeing them AT ALL in the first place!! (Some of this is stemmed by JD’s post at Get Rich Slowly…)
