Educate Kids on Personal Finance

by PT on December 10, 2007

Need a good source for personal finance information for a child or teenager? MyMoney.gov presents their financial organization resource list in the area of K-Postsecondary Education:

  • Jump$tart
http://www.jumpstart.org/ - Jump$tart has a cool “reality check” feature for older teens that basically gives them an idea of what it will be like to live without ole mom and dad. It let’s you pick what lifestyle you want to live and tells you how much you’ll need to make an hour to support yourself. It even translates that into what level of education you’ll need to earn that hourly wage. Pretty cool.
  • Department of the Treasury: Money Math
www.publicdebt.treas.gov/mar/marmoneymath.htm - This site is a good resource for teachers.
  • Junior Achievement
http://www.myja.org/ - I’ve heard of JA’s but never participated in their classroom volunteer work. I’ve heard it’s great though. On their website they have a neat feature for students (http://studentcenter.ja.org/).
  • Wall Street Journal: Classroom Edition
http://www.wsjclassroomedition.com/index.html - Wow! I was blown away by all that they have here. Very helpful stuff for students and teachers. One of my favorite sections was the “Teacher’s Lounge”, which allows you to read and discuss a recent WSJ article.
