Always Go to Lunch with the Big Boss!

Today I was invited by my “big” boss to lunch with our team. The “big” boss, as I call him, is three evil corporation hiarchical levels above me. Anyway, I gladly said yes. I always do these types of events because it usually means: a very nice lunch, a free lunch, a longer lunch than normal (i.e. more time away from my cube), a chance to get to know your team (including the big boss) better and vice versa.
It never fails though, at every company I’ve been with, there’s always a few employees in our group that turn this offer down. They’d rather go to lunch with a friend or eat at their desk. I don’t get it. In my opinion, this is a no-brainer. You should always do these lunches. I guess maybe they’re afraid of an awkward lunch like the one between Jim and Michael (from the Office episode “The Secret”).
